The Napkin Paradox

Store ‘em in your glove compartment, pocket, purse, desk drawer, and any other place you can think of. Personalized napkins are convenient and portable. Sadly, to their chagrin, napkins can be so unpredictable. They are meant to do what they do best – clean up a mess. In a worst case scenario they make creative I.O.U’s. Yes, write your bucket list on one or the next great American novel. Many billion dollar ideas were first written on a napkin. I really don’t know if this true or not, but just picture two creative types meeting over a cup of Joe, jotting down what looks like the beginning of a billion dollar idea. It could happen.
This paradox begins at the dinner table. Well, actually, it begins where food is eaten and your favorite latte is happily consumed. Can napkins be used for other things other than wiping the barbecue sauce from our chins? Be it inside your car, prison cell or back stage at a White Snake Concert – please, don’t ask - personalized napkins have many uses. Is this true? Personalize your own napkin set for a birthday party, anniversary celebration, or school prom. Disprove this fallacy of expected spotlessness. Napkins can do more than just that. I bet you have a story or two to share.

Certainly personalized napkins have a wide range of uses beyond wiping your face during meals. They work well as drink coasters, accentuate the decorations at holiday parties, and can be used to clean up small spills.
Beyond that, napkins have a proud tradition as writing surfaces. How many thousands, maybe millions phone numbers have been exchanged on napkins over the years? How many times has someone written a shopping list on the back of their personalized napkin? Written a note to a friend or family member on the back of a napkin because it’s the only thing to write on nearby? It’s almost a cliche at this point, and while it’s not the ideal thing to write on, it will usually do the job if you don’t have any personalized stationery or other paper nearby.

I don’t know if it’s still common to give your phone number to someone by writing it on a personalized napkin. These days you can just program numbers straight into your cell phone, so writing them down might be falling by the wayside. But then I don’t really frequent the dating scene these days, so I really don’t know how that goes anymore.

I used to wait tables while I was in school, and I wanted to be a writer as well. Whenever I got story ideas, I would grab an extra personalized napkin (there was no room on my uniform to carry my personalized notepad), and write down whatever ideas or thoughts I had so I could work on them later. Napkins are definitely not ideal for writing on, but sometimes that’s all you have available. It really is impressive the variety of things you can do with personalized napkins, though.

Storing personalized napkins in your car’s glove box is an idea I’ve never thought of before. I’ve definitely been in situations where that would have come in handy. Sometimes when I go to the drive-thru, I don’t always get enough napkins, especially if I have other people in the car and we all get food. Having some extra personalized napkins for that situation would solve the problem nicely. They don’t have to be super awesome – it’s better to save the really nice foil-stamped and monogrammed napkins for special occasions, in my opinion, so that you don’t wear out their welcome. But some nice, cool personalized napkins that you like, but maybe don’t quite fit your normal style for parties would be a good thing to keep in the car with you for when you really need one.
