I’m always glad to see blogs highlighting the importance of personalized thank you cards. A lot of people will just give a verbal thank you, or send a quick email or text, if they bother at all to acknowledge when somebody does something nice for them. To me, that just isn’t enough. To truly show your appreciation for such things, a personalized thank you card is the way to go. It shows that you cared enough to go to a little bit more effort in showing your gratitude.

I was taught as a child that if you don’t send thank you cards when people do something nice for you, then you shouldn’t expect them to do so again. I never particularly liked sending out all those personalized thank you cards after birthdays, Christmas, or any other time I was given gifts, but it taught me a valuable life lesson. Showing your appreciation is important when somebody goes out of their way to help you, or give you a gift, or otherwise does something nice for you. For some people, sending an email thanking them for helping you or an e-card thanking them for the birthday gift might be enough. But for many people, those are lazy methods of showing gratitude. They might think something like “If all you could bother to send was a two-minute email thanking me for that favor, it must not have meant all that much to you after all” Granted, that’s probably a worst-case scenario, and if you know the person you should know whether they feel that way or not. But why take the chance, I say? Why not go all out and send those personalized thank you cards to really show that you appreciated it?

Another thing that bears mentioning is that personalized thank you cards are a great way to leave an impression when you have a job interview. Maxine, you’re absolutely right. I have personally seen a thank you card make the difference between getting hired and losing the job out to someone else, so you really cannot overstate the importance of sending out those personalized cards after an interview. It helps you leave a more positive impression and can help set you a cut above the other people competing for that same job. Obviously it’s not enough by itself, but when you’re interviewing for a job every little advantage you can get is something you have to use. I would definitely recommend some personalized thank you notes to anyone looking for a job so you can give them to interviewers.
