New Grad Lands Job with Help from Personalized Stationery
On June 15, we received the following email from a customer:
“In this tough economy jobs for college grads are hard to come by. My son applied for a position and was one of over a hundred applicants. Only 3 of the 100 wrote a personal thank you note for the interview. His was the only one on personalized stationery. His boss recently told him that the personalized stationery was the deciding factor…the difference that set him apart from the other applicants. Thank you “Gifts in 24″ for turning out a quality product at an affordable price for your customers such as my son.”
Wow. Does it get any more convincing than that? Out of 100 applicants, this college grad distinguishes himself with a hand-written note on personalized stationery.
I got to talk with Tyler Stricklin and his mom, Pauline, who originally shared his story with us.
Giftsin24.com: Why did you choose to write a note on personalized stationery instead of sending an email?
Tyler Stricklin: Well since I was young I was always taught to write thank you notes. They started when I was young on construction paper and over the years they have developed in to your general cards with blank space to write comments. As I graduated college I wanted to be sure that my thank you notes to employers got the point across, made a bold statement, and stuck out from the other applicants’ notes. My personalized stationery accomplished everything and more.
G24: Do you remember any details about what your boss said about the note?
TS: Of the few people who took the time to write thank you notes, I was the only one who used personalized stationery. My employer’s exact words were, “Your note didn’t land you this job but it set you apart from everyone else. When I read your note I immediately moved your resume to the top of the list.”
G24: How did that make you feel?
TS: Knowing that the 20 minutes I set aside to write a thank you set me apart from the competition made me feel great. Spending the little bit of money on the affordable personalized stationery was a great investment and is paying for itself ten fold now.
G24: Have you shared this job search strategy with your friends?
TS: I absolutely have! It’s these little things during these rough economic times that make all the difference in the world when trying to find a job.
G24: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Pauline Stricklin: A few years ago I received personalized stationery from your company. To this day, I say that was the best gift I have ever received! I loved the personal touch to my correspondence and have received many compliments. Since receiving that gift, we have purchased stationery for hard to buy for co-workers on several occasions. The prompt shipping is great too since it is always a last minute purchase. I have purchased items for graduations, weddings and teacher gifts too.
In the e-world of instantaneousness, it’s nice to know that good, old-fashioned values and traditions not only stand the test of time but make a real difference. A young man takes the time to pen a personal thank you for the privilege of interviewing, and he sets himself apart from the crowd.
Congratulations, Tyler!

Dear Heather,
Thank you so much for this post and including the interview between G24 and Tyler and his mother. I work at a large public university coordinating a research program. My students are juniors and seniors and most are in various stages of finding internships, jobs, etc. I ALWAYS impress upon my students the importance of sending a proper, hand-written thank-you note for interviews and whenever someone goes out of their way to do something on their behalf. When I am inevitably met with a few sighs and remarks like “What about a thank-you email?”, I explain the difference between these modes of communications and the larger message they send. A hand-written thank-you note impresses upon a potential employer that you recognize that their time is valuable, and you appreciate the opportunity to be interviewed enough that you took the time to put pen to paper and make this acknowledgment personal.
Personalized stationery is part of my correspondence arsenal and while costly at the time, one of the best and most useful gifs I have ever treated myself to.
Thank you again for this important post. And congratulations to Tyler as well!

Dear Hope,
Thank you for sharing your insights. I whole-heartedly agree with you about the importance of hand-written notes, especially to potential employers. Tyler is living proof of its importance! I invite you to share his story with your students.
In a world where so much personality is lost in instant online communication, something as seemingly simple as a hand-written note on personalized stationery can make all the difference.
Kind regards,
