In the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, soldiers often had their monograms emblazoned onto their buttons to signify ownership of clothing.  Monograms were also used on personal effects and, of course, monogram stationery.

During the Victorian era (1837 – 1901), personal monograms were very in vogue, a European craze that crossed the pond to pervade American culture.  Every sophisticated gentleman corresponded on his own personalized monogram stationery, and every respectable lady displayed dainty monograms on embroidered linens and embossed stationery.  The monogram was seen not only as a status symbol but also as an illustration of personality.

Modern Day Monogramming

Since then, personalized monograms have ebbed and flowed with fashion and trend.  Many of us can remember the revitalization of the monogram in the 1980′s, when ladies rushed to get monograms on just about everything from purses to personalized stationery.  Even as a kid in the eighties, I had my own monogrammed notes and personalized stationery for just about every occasion – notepads, letter writing, thank you notes – you name it!

Giftsin24.com will collect entries from April 1, 2009 to May 1, 2009. Samara O’Shea will review all entries and choose one winner to be announced on May 18, 2009. The winner will be contacted on May 18, 2009. Giftsin24 will award the winner a $150 gift certificate and two autographed books by Samara O’Shea (worth $19.95 each).
