Yes, the cotton fibers are organic, and one doesn't have to cut down a tree in order to make them, but ... the farmers grow cotton and then harvest it, and then grow it again, year after year. So a great deal of energy is expended on the growing and the transportation of cotton. The advantage of 100% recycled paper is that it takes fibers that were already in-circulation in our environment and enables the mills to simply "remake" the paper, using these same fibers for a second or third time. To put it more simply-- 100% recycled paper uses a material that is already available and easy to transport and convert into paper. Cotton fibers must be "manufactured" via agricultural methods and require the same energy costs and chemicals that other kinds of agriculture require.
